This full time or part-time Master's level programme is designed for professionals such as:

• surgeons (from any surgical specialty and at any level of training),
• anaesthetists
• nurses
• operating department staff
• those from Allied Health Professions, from other specialties that undertake invasive procedures such as obstetrics or interventional radiology,
• or those with a background in education and training.

The MEd offers a sound theoretical background to the principles of surgical education, a rigorous academic training, an introduction to appropriate research methods and practice, and the opportunity for intellectual growth and development within a challenging, stimulating yet supportive environment.

Programme features

• Core modules and an options choice
• Taught in several week-long blocks
• Use of innovative simulated training equipment
• The opportunity to learn appropriate research skills and carry out a research project under supervision
• Discussion with tutors and fellow participants to enhance understanding and critical reasoning
• Experiential learning and reflection to help bring together theory and practice and develop professional judgement in the area of education and training
• Use of learning technology to support learning and to share information
• Examination by means of submitted work and the use of coursework
• An opportunity to focus on education and training in specific contexts and for specific purposes
• Expert tutors who are practitioners and researchers in the field
• An introduction to key literature and research, with the reading of a selection of this material built into pre and post module periods
• Practical training in a range of educational techniques, e.g. for teaching in the theatre or assessing psychomotor skills.

The programme develops new areas of teaching to reflect contemporary research and scholarship, and ensures that the themes of surgery and education are always linked.

It aims to attract highly motivated UK and overseas students who are seeking a good basis from which to assume more responsibility and take on a leadership role in this rapidly growing field (in deaneries, surgical colleges, school of surgery, universities or hospitals), and those who intend to go on and study for a PhD.
