The research areas are divided into four sub-themes. Some areas of research cut across a number of groups.

The Strategic Theme for Health Technology brings together all of the diverse projects across the Faculty of Medicine and shows the extraordinary innovation and diversity of the research teams, the direction and applications of their work.

Imperial College is at the forefront of medical innovation, drawing together scientists, clinicians and engineers to provide clinical excellence, outstanding research, and quality teaching.

Through interdisciplinary working and drawing on the reservoir of skills, departments linked to this research theme provide the translational element of biomedical research that will enhance patient care in the future. The Faculty has developed strong relationships with, industry, government organisations, healthcare providers, and educational institutions to facilitate the translation of its research into practical applications.

From the stethoscope to the fMRI scanner, advances in medicine have been intimately linked with advances in technology. The advent of PET, CAT, MRI and fMRI scanners have brought diagnostic advances that would have been unthinkable twenty years ago.  Laparoscopic (keyhole) and robotic surgery have brought safer, less invasive treatments.  Information technology is now improving the reliability and safety of healthcare, assisting and guiding clinicians with decision support, communication and coordination of care.

A formal strategy will be developed which will outline the major themes and directions for future research and innovation.
