Genomic Medicine

The Section of Genomic Medicine comprises a group of scientists studying the genetics of human multifactorial diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes and obesity.

The major goals of our research are:

  • To identify genes that influence susceptibility to type 2 diabetes and obesity.
  • To determine the cellular and physiological functions of susceptibility genes in the normal and pathological states, including the nature of its interactions with other susceptibility genes and environmental factors.

Ultimately, our research aims to advance our understanding of the patho-physiological mechanisms that underlie the development of these alarmingly common metabolic diseases. This will lead to: (i) improved medical treatment for obese and diabetic patients; and (ii) the early, precise detection of genetically predisposed individuals, which will allow personalized lifestyle (diet, exercise) and/or pharmaceutical preventative treatments.
