Dr Ghnim G Alsheikh

Qualified in medicine and surgery (1970), PhD St Thomas's Hospital Medical school (1978), research fellow at Karolinska Institute, Sweden (1985-6), Fellow of the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopedic Surgeons (1989), DPHC (1999), FFPH (2002). I was founding dean of medicine in Tikrit and Hadhramout universities (1988-2000), then I joined WHO as regional adviser and coordinator of HRH and medical education (2000-9). As early as 1988 I twice led teams in introducing for first time innovative PBL-CPC curricula in Iraq and Yemen. Basic sciences, population health and clinical disciplines were smoothly and fully integrated in all study years adopting active learning and assessment approahes. I also planned and led implementation of multidisciplinary involvement of staff and HC professionals in a curricular community-based students' research modules running vertically through 4 study years. I gained wide international experience through working in different countries of middle esat, Africa and Asia and provided hands-on technical support in HRH development and medical education reform and helped establishing national systems of accreditation in 15 countries. I actively contributed to WHO HRH strategies and interventions at national, regional and global levels. I taught and facilitated undergraduate learning in more 4 medical schools in different countries and tutored and supervised postgraduate diplomas, masters and PhD tudents. I have organized and participated in more than 130 events and published 80 articles, studies and abstracts.  Currently I am an Hon Lecturer at WHO Collaborating Centre, Department of PC and PH, Imerial College London and acts as expert and adviser in Global Health Workforce Alliance, Geneva since 2009.
